French operator phone system or AI voice agent: which should you choose?

The traditional phone systems offered by French operators provide a number, a recorded greeting, a keypad IVR, call distribution to landlines, mobiles or apps and, depending on the package, voicemail. An AI voice agent does not do this internal routing work: it converses with the caller, answers their questions and handles their request. Some operators now offer their own AI option, such as Bouygues Telecom Pro with Mon Standard Intelligent. A traditional phone system and an independent agent can be combined, with the phone system forwarding to the agent the calls it cannot serve.

What the operators’ packages include

Orange pro states that its Connect Pro package includes a virtual phone system with an interactive voice response system, inbound call management and hold music; on the same page, voicemail and redirection to a mobile or landline are listed among the features of virtual phone systems in general. SFR Business’s Standard Digital, the web app of its Pack Business Unifié, highlights drag-and-drop transfer, a visual queue and a display of colleagues’ availability; a customised IVR, greeting announcements and hold music are among the call-answering options offered alongside it.

Bouygues Telecom’s Mon Standard Pro provides a geographic number or a number starting with 09 (a French non-geographic number), distributes calls to landlines and mobiles and is configured from the customer account (greeting messages, hold music, opening hours). Free Pro’s Coms Pro combines IVR, routing, call forwarding, voicemail and an app for desktop and mobile.

Bouygues Telecom Pro also offers Mon Standard Intelligent, which builds on Mon Standard Pro and adds an AI voice agent: it converses with the caller, directs them to the right person, transcribes and summarises every call and can send a link to your calendar by SMS. It is an option worth comparing if you are already a customer.

The limitation of traditional phone systems: the keypad menu

Traditional phone systems route the call but do not handle it. The IVR asks the caller to press 1 or 2 to reach a department; if nobody picks up there, the call ends on a message or in voicemail.

A conversational agent understands a freely worded request, answers whatever it can and only involves a person when that is useful. Our resource on traditional vs conversational IVR and our IVR page explain this difference in detail.

Keep your phone system and add an agent

The operator pages reviewed mention call forwarding, redirection or call transfer rules. Depending on the options in your package, you can forward unanswered calls, out-of-hours calls or a specific IVR branch to the agent; check that forwarding to an external number is possible. The number, the contract and the team’s handsets stay the same.

Alyas then takes these calls, announces that it is an AI and that the call is recorded, answers from your information, offers an appointment if a calendar is connected and transfers to the chosen number when a person needs to step in.

When the operator’s package is enough

If your team almost always picks up, if your callers know which department they want and if voicemail is rarely used, your operator’s phone system does what is expected of it. An AI agent only adds value where calls go unanswered or the same questions keep coming up.

Alyas is not a phone system: it provides no handsets, no app for the team and no SMS. Our AI phone system page explains how it works alongside an existing phone system.

Our verdict

For routing calls to a team, your operator’s phone system remains the right tool and there is no reason to change it. To make sure unanswered calls get a response instead of voicemail, add a voice agent like Alyas through call forwarding, or compare it with your operator’s AI option where one exists.

Frequently asked questions

What does Orange pro’s phone system include?

On its landline and phone system page, Orange pro states that the Connect Pro package includes a virtual phone system with an interactive voice response system, inbound call management and hold music. The same page lists voicemail and redirection to a mobile or landline among the features of virtual phone systems: check whether they are included in your contract.

Can an AI voice agent be connected to an Orange, SFR, Bouygues or Free phone system?

In principle, yes, through call forwarding, if your package allows forwarding to an external number: the phone system forwards certain calls (unanswered, out-of-hours or from an IVR option) to the agent. You keep your operator, your number and your subscription.

Does an AI voice agent replace the operator’s voicemail?

For the calls forwarded to it, yes: instead of a message to listen to, you receive a transcript, a summary and the contact details of the caller, who may have got an answer on the spot.
