The call from someone who is hesitating
The questions come up again and again: opening hours, activities and classes on offer, coaching, how busy it gets at different times, access and parking, equipment to bring. These are questions of fact, which call for precise, up-to-date answers written by the team.
Behind these questions there is sometimes a fear: not being at the right level, not knowing how to use the machines, being lost on the first day. Answering honestly, without promising results, and offering to come and try is more convincing than a speech.
Offering a trial session rather than a speech
If your gym offers a trial session, it is the most concrete offer to make over the phone. Book it into a specific slot in your diary, noting the name, the number, the activity the person is interested in and what they are looking for: getting back into it after a break, preparing for an event, group classes.
Then give the practical instructions as you have defined them: arrival time, what to wear, any documents to show, who will welcome them. Passed on to the coach or the front desk on the day, this information makes the first visit simpler.
What the person should know about memberships
Service-public.fr, the French government’s official information site, cites the annual gym membership as a typical example of a contract with tacit renewal (automatic renewal). The provider must inform the member in writing of their right not to renew the contract, no earlier than three months and no later than one month before the deadline, with that date in a prominent box; failing that, article L215-1 of the French Consumer Code (code de la consommation) allows the member to end the contract free of charge at any time from the renewal date. The same site states that contracts with a gym can be cancelled “in 3 clicks”, the rule in article L215-1-1 of the Consumer Code applying to contracts concluded, or capable of being concluded, electronically.
If the membership is taken out remotely, online or by phone, service-public.fr recalls that the consumer in principle has a withdrawal period of at least 14 days. Finally, some contracts provide for a minimum commitment period, with penalties for leaving early. These points must appear clearly in your terms, and reception points to them rather than summarising them from memory.
No promises over the phone
Reception promises neither a physical result, nor a price outside your rate card, nor “no commitment” if a commitment exists. It does not present as temporary an offer that is not. One sentence too many on the phone can become a dispute at the time of cancellation.
Good practice is to give factual information, offer the trial and invite the person to read the membership terms before committing, on site or online.
After the trial: the callback, with the person’s agreement
Calling someone back after their trial session to offer them a membership is not trivial. In France, since 11 August 2026, commercial telephone canvassing has been prohibited in principle, unless the call relates to an existing contract or the consumer has given prior consent, freely and knowingly, by a clear positive act, for specified goods or services and for a period of one year at most, as service-public.fr summarises it.
If you wish to call back, ask during the call or at the trial session, specifying the purpose of the callback and the duration of this consent, and note the answer. A callback that was requested and accepted is also better received than an unexpected call.
A reception that books the trial at any hour
Alyas, the AI voice agent, answers 24 hours a day from the information you give it about your hours, your classes and your terms, and says when it does not know, offering to pass the request on. If Google Calendar or Cal.com is connected, it can book the trial session; it collects the contact details, and each call is transcribed and summarised in your workspace. A caller who asks is transferred to your transfer number. A free 10-day trial, with no credit card required, lets you check its answers against your own terms.
Frequently asked questions
Can a gym membership be cancelled online?
Service-public.fr cites gyms among the providers covered by cancellation “in 3 clicks”. Article L215-1-1 of the Consumer Code requires a free electronic cancellation feature where the contract was concluded, or can be concluded, electronically.
Must the gym give notice before the membership is renewed?
Yes. For a contract with tacit renewal, the provider informs the member in writing of their right not to renew, no earlier than three months and no later than one month before the deadline. Failing that, the member can end the contract free of charge at any time from the renewal date (article L215-1 of the Consumer Code).
Can you call someone back after their trial session?
Since 11 August 2026, telephone canvassing has been prohibited in principle in France, unless there is an existing contract or the consumer has given prior consent. So ask for their agreement to be called back, specifying the purpose of the call.
